OUR HISTORY

Restore Rundberg - The Rundberg neighborhood, grappling with challenges like high crime rates and a transient population, receives a critical boost with the launch of the "Restore Rundberg" initiative. This effort represents a turning point, signaling the start of a concerted effort to rejuvenate and empower the community.

The Austin Police Department (APD) played a crucial role in shifting the focus from strict enforcement to community engagement and collaboration. This change included transitioning to walking patrols and prioritizing listening to residents' concerns over making arrests.

2014-2015: Restore Rundberg Implementation and Process Report

Strategic Implementation: Over these two years, the Restore Rundberg initiative takes shape with a focus on strategic implementation. Efforts are made to bring together various stakeholders, including law enforcement, community members, and local organizations, to create a cohesive plan for neighborhood improvement.

In 2014, The Rundberg Educational Advancement District (READ) Alliance was established. This maked a significant shift towards prioritizing education and youth engagement, aiming to sustain and build upon the progress made in reducing crime. It was established by Austin Police District Representative Ray Kianes as part of the broader Restore Rundberg neighborhood revitalization initiative. The main purpose of the READ Alliance was to sustain the significant reduction in criminal activity in the Rundberg area, particularly at I35 and Rundberg Lane.

In 20__, the READ Alliance became known as the Rundberg Alliance. As an Alliance we work with neighborhood partners to put on local family events, student-led beautification projects, and promote ongoing community events in the area. Some notable projects and events organized by the Rundberg Alliance include the painting of the cistern at Barrington Elementary School in collaboration with local students and artists, as well as hosting our annual Fall Festival, which celebrates the diverse cultures in the neighborhood and provides safe and enjoyable community activities. This upcoming April we will be hosting our inaugural Spring Festival, more details to come.
